I hate to have to bring this up...but all the poems on this page are sub-ject to copyright laws. Yeah, I know.
A Gal and Her Horse
Doesn’t matter very much to me The kind of critter there might be Who winds its way into my life As long as there’s no more strife. When I was just a little squirt I was far from an introvert My daddy took me everywhere Each new place beyond compare There was a special trip we took At some stock he needed to look ‘Cause two or three he might buy On the condition I’d like to try A thought occurred to me at last Once or twice in a week just past I caught my dad cleaning up old tack Stuff he’d had in his youth way back A saddle, bridle, and reins that matched A pad and tapaderos there were attached There were brushes, combs, and picks All ya need to groom pretty darn quick Oh my gosh could this be the trip When I get to start a partnership With a horse I’d been wishin’ I’d get I tried not to get excited just yet But when daddy said let’s get goin’ I knew for sure the time was comin Why would we go was my first thought If not my horse would soon be bought Sure enough, we turned down the lane To the neighbors; I tried to restrain The joy I felt without much success I was just too happy, I must confess Old man Perkins extended his hand Dad did the same, that’s part of the plan ‘Fore the horse tradin’ commenced I had to stay quiet; the talk was intense Four young Appys millin’ in the corral Two I admired, but which one shall I choose; gosh I wish dad would buy Both of them; I’m sure that won’t fly. Dumbfounded was I when Dad simply smiled To Perkins he said this deal’s worthwhile I reckon I’ll buy one of them horses So little gal the decision of course is Up to you so dang sure get off the fence Don’t let fancy hides blind your good sense Surprised I was that dad left this to me If I messed this up whatta fool I’d be Perched on the fence in more ways than one I watched and studied, until they was done Millin’ around and they all settled down Hopin’ we’d find some common ground And one might mosey up to just take a look One that is curious and not likely to spook There were four sets of eyes lookin my way I was dang sure hopin’ they wouldn’t all stay Out of reach and spoil my plan to own A good lil pony that would be mine alone I waited and waited; my patience wore thin My torment vanished; I commenced to grin Two of them ponies advanced quite a piece Then in an instant their courage increased Weren’t long all four were a nuzzlin’ my hand They were inclined to stay as long as I’d stand Now what should I do? I petted them all, Gently rubbed and poked we sure had a ball I had to decide; which one to choose Oh, what the heck, I had nothin’ to lose Went to the gate; a buckskin he followed Purt near to bustin’; I barely swallowed Yes sir he was the one, no doubt about that He was a whole lot like me; why he stole my hat He ran round the pen with my hat in his mouth I’d forgotten my business; this deal could go south. I stepped up to block him; he stopped in his tracks He must have some smarts, by the way he acts. I wanted to see if he’d try to hide Always havin’ his buddies by his side. He had his chance but he never did go His eyes stayed on me wantin’ to show He had some sense and wanted to try He’ll be pretty darn good, by and by. A buckskin with spots shiny chrome I’d sure like to bring this one home. I was getting excited dad could tell Time to make the deal after a spell Of dickerin ‘...talkin’ back and forth A purchase made, dad knew his worth At long last a dream had come true Folks think I’m crazy; if they only knew How to love an animal as if he were kin My time had come, can’t wait to begin You can just call me a gal and her horse... |
Considerin’ How Things Stand…
I was thinkin’ the other day There has to be a better way Instead folks fussin’ and fightin’ Teach ‘em somethin’ enlightnin’ Considerin’ how things stand… Sure there’s folks smarter than me But don’t know why they can’t see They should damn well legislate ‘Fore time makes it too damn late Considerin’ how things stand… Folks are dyin’ from a damn disease Nothin’ we’re doin’ seems to appease The spread of contagion across the land Unaware people hold a cure in their hand Considerin’ how things stand… Besides disease society’s a mess Cops are causing much more distress ‘Stead of protectin’ those in their charge They’re harassin’ and killin’ folks at large Considerin’ how things stand… Those in charge are so way out of touch Average Joe’s sure they don’t care much Maybe they don’t; they call on our troops To control their brothers in one fail swoop Considerin’ how things stand… I saw on TV George’s fair well tribute His life and death his family’s salute Rhetoric’s the same as always before Society must change down to the core Considerin’ how things stand… If our hearts and souls we don’t change Wholesale slaughter will likely arrange A world where freedom is just a word So long lost the meaning seems absurd Considerin’ how things stand… Seems to me, considerin’ how things stand Dontcha think we should take command So the lives of our children will be secure And there lives won’t end too premature Considerin’ how things stand… For Those Who Passed
For sure this has been a crappy year A pandemic and civil strife taking hold There is no doubt we could cower in fear. Is there anyone who might be so bold As to stand up and give the Bronx Cheer To the naysayers and the haters so cold Who think life is so cheap they can smear Blood of citizen’s whose rights they’ve rolled Over in order to push an agenda meant to clear Out resistance and allow a fascist who would mold Our land to a 4th Reich and kill freedom held so dear We can’t stand silent and allow evil to take hold. Yes so far this year has been one to forget Still we can’t do that or we fail our children I know we are tempted to turn away and yet Remember those before us who fought when They could have run or said that’s a threat Not ours to fix; we did that once, then again Our fathers landed on Normandy’s beach to get Rid of an evil and all of Europe they did unchain Four years they remained so don’t ever forget They fought for the next generation to gain A peaceful world and I’m sure they regret The lives lost along the way and all the pain. There are those who say the cost is too high What is the cost to stand by and do nothing What is the plan to save us; if it goes awry Then what will the morning’s sun bring Say don’t rock the boat; can we justify A stance on the side while a few sing Out about injustice; no we must all defy Violence and hate; raise such a wellspring Of noise the world can’t mistake our war cry Before it’s too late; resist the hate spewing We must raise our voice; everyone en masse We, all of us, owe that much to those who passed… This is a new poem from my new book The Arrangement:
Harmony A way of life that’s so sublime O’er blown with sands of time. A harmony so at peace With nature’s bounty never ceased. A love above all others shone like a light from heaven alone. Only grew with kind, loving care The Creator left room to spare. So that all on earth could see their mother’s face would truly be A beacon through many outrageous storms Would keep us safe when nature performs Her frightening dance to cleanse the world Of all the damage from human’s hurled At their home from ignorance and greed Replacing common sense for what we need. Mother Earth the Creator’s masterpiece Is not our own, but is merely a lease. How can we destroy what we don’t own A home that’s meant for those unborn. When will we learn when we devastate The earth where we live our only fate On this planet like a desert so desolate Is to die with our mother we desecrate. Let us all pray that soon we return To life as intended and that we spurn This headlong crash that won’t set us free Only an honorable life leads to harmony |
